Everest Base Camp Trek & Stay FAQs
-
Rugged Luxury Expeditions combines expedition-level leadership with rare access and refined operational support. Our guides have summited Everest, our logistics mirror those used on full Himalayan expeditions, and our itinerary is designed to support guests physically and mentally at altitude. Most trekkers stop just short of Everest Base Camp proper at Trekkers’ Rock, a spray-painted outcrop nearly half a mile below the actual expedition camp. Rugged Luxury guests enter Everest Base Camp proper on the Khumbu Glacier and stay for two nights within a working expedition environment. This extended access allows time to observe base camp life, interact with climbers and staff, and experience the mountain without rushing through it.
-
The journey to Everest Base Camp is a moderate, steady trek designed for guests with good basic fitness. Our comfort-forward pacing, expert guides, and thoughtful acclimatization schedule allow you to move at a sustainable rhythm without pressure or rush. No prior trekking or altitude experience is required, only the ability to walk consistently and a willingness to move deliberately rather than rush the experience.
-
Along the trail, guests stay in the best available teahouses and mountain lodges in each village, selected for cleanliness, warmth, and reliability. Single-room accommodations are included, with dual occupancy offered for couples. At Everest Base Camp, guests stay in our luxury camp on the Khumbu Glacier, featuring insulated private tents, full bedding, reliable power, and a heated dining and social dome. This is not hotel luxury. It is exceptional expedition hospitality designed to support rest, warmth, and well-being at 17,500 feet.
-
Altitude affects everyone differently, which is why our itinerary is designed around gradual ascent and active acclimatization. Our guides are trained to recognize early symptoms and adjust pacing or plans as needed. Most guests acclimatize well with our conservative schedule, hydration protocols, and rest days. Optional medications should be discussed with your personal physician prior to departure.

Meals in the Khumbu Valley are simple, nourishing, and locally sourced, think soups, noodles, rice dishes, omelets, and hearty staples. At our private Everest Base Camp, you’ll enjoy a higher level of comfort, including fresh produce, thoughtfully prepared dishes, and the best expedition cuisine on the mountain. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.
-
Packing focuses on layering, insulation, and personal comfort. Rugged Luxury Expeditions provides a high-quality sleeping bag and manages the transport of your main duffel between overnight stops. You will trek each day with only a light daypack containing water, layers, and essentials. A detailed packing guide is provided after registration.

No. This trek is designed for curious, motivated travelers rather than seasoned mountaineers. Our pacing, leadership, and comfort-forward approach enable first-time trekkers to experience the Khumbu Valley and Everest Base Camp safely and meaningfully, guided by world-class expedition teams.
-
Safety is led by our Everest-summit-level guides and supported by the same proven expedition protocols used by Climbing the Seven Summits on their summit teams. We continuously monitor altitude, weather, pacing, hydration, and guest health, and our guides make proactive decisions as true high-altitude professionals. With essential medical equipment on hand and flexibility built into the itinerary, you’re supported by the same standard of care trusted by climbers heading for the top of the world.

At Everest Base Camp, guests stay at expedition camp on the Khumbu Glacier. The heart of camp is the heated dining and social dome, often referred to as the Big House, where meals, espresso drinks, conversation, and downtime naturally unfold throughout the day. Guests have access to electricity and charging in their tents, reliable internet connectivity, hot water for washing, and private restroom facilities designed for comfort at altitude.
Morning beverage service is available, allowing guests to start the day warm and unhurried while taking in views of the surrounding glacier and expedition activity. Time at Base Camp is intentionally flexible, with space to rest, read, observe the rhythm of expedition life, or socialize.
Optional experiences include a beginner-friendly ice-climbing clinic on the Khumbu Glacier, providing hands-on exposure to expedition terrain and technical skills under the guidance of experienced professionals.
-
The helicopter return from Everest Base Camp allows guests to avoid retracing days of trail while gaining a dramatic aerial perspective of the Khumbu Valley. This choice reduces physical fatigue, preserves recovery at altitude, and provides a fitting conclusion to the journey. It is an operational decision rooted in safety, comfort, and efficiency, not convenience alone.
-
Yes. Companions are welcome to join the journey, provided space is available in Kathmandu accommodations and along the trail. We recommend confirming additional travelers early, as lodging in the Khumbu Valley can be limited during peak climbing season.
-
Most guests purchase a local Ncell SIM card in Kathmandu for calls and data coverage throughout much of the Khumbu Valley. As you ascend, connectivity becomes more limited, but Wi-Fi is available for purchase in many teahouses and at Everest Base Camp. We encourage guests to view connectivity as a convenience, not a guarantee, and to enjoy the rare opportunity to disconnect.
