Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail Trek Itinerary

A hallmark of an excellent guide team is not just having a well-developed itinerary and logistics, but also having the freedom and resources to adjust along the way. One sure way to have a bad experience while adventuring in the mountains is to rigidly stick to a pre-arranged schedule, regardless of what happens while on the trail.

It’s likely that your trip will have a few days that don’t align perfectly with the planned itinerary.

We encourage you to embrace this flexibility, knowing that any changes we make are made with your best experience in mind. Whether it's adding a rest day or adjusting our plans to take advantage of favorable weather, these modifications will help ensure both you and the team have the best experience possible throughout the climb.

  • Your journey begins in Cusco, where our team greets you at the airport before a private transfer down into the Sacred Valley. This lower elevation provides the ideal environment for acclimatization while offering your first glimpse of the dramatic Andean landscape. That evening, the group gathers for welcome drinks and a relaxed dinner at Tambo del Inka, where your expedition leader introduces the journey ahead and prepares the team for the days to come.

  • Today offers a deeper introduction to the culture and landscapes of the Andes. After breakfast, we visit the striking Maras salt terraces before continuing to the village of Chinchero for a private weaving demonstration with local artisans. A leisurely three-course lunch at a historic hacienda follows, before exploring the remarkable Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo. Back at the hotel, your expedition leader will conduct personal gear checks and prepare everyone for the start of the trail.

  • An early departure brings us to the trailhead at Kilometer 82, where we meet the trekking team that will support our journey. After introductions and final preparations, the trek begins along the ancient Inca pathway. Passing traditional villages and early archaeological sites, we reach our first camp in the mountains. By the time you arrive, tents are prepared, warm drinks are waiting, and the expedition team welcomes you into camp for dinner and a well-earned rest.

  • Today is the most physically demanding day of the trek and one of the most rewarding. The trail climbs steadily through alpine landscapes toward Dead Woman’s Pass, the highest point on the Inca Trail. Reaching the summit is a true expedition milestone, celebrated with a toast before descending into the Pacaymayu valley. In camp, hot showers, massages, and a chef-prepared dinner provide time to recover and recharge.

  • The trail continues through cloud forest and high ridgelines, passing a series of beautifully preserved Inca sites rarely seen by most visitors to Machu Picchu. Along the way, our team pauses for a traditional ceremony honoring Pachamama, the Andean earth mother. After lunch along the trail, the route winds toward Phuyupatamarca, where camp awaits with warm drinks, comfortable tents, and expansive views across the mountains.

  • The final day of the trek begins early as we descend toward the famed Sun Gate. From here, Machu Picchu reveals itself dramatically below, offering one of the most unforgettable arrival moments in travel. After exploring the citadel with your guides, we descend to the riverside town of Aguas Calientes for a comfortable night at Inkaterra Pueblo. A relaxing evening and celebratory dinner mark the completion of the trail.

  • After a leisurely morning, we return to Machu Picchu for a deeper exploration of the ancient city and its remarkable terraces and temples. Later in the afternoon, the journey concludes in style aboard the legendary Hiram Bingham train. With cocktails, live music, and a multi-course dinner served on board, the scenic ride through the Sacred Valley offers a festive and memorable finale to the expedition.

  • Your expedition concludes back in Cusco, where a final breakfast allows time to reflect on the journey before private transfers to the airport. Many travelers choose to extend their stay in Peru, but for those departing today, the experience ends with the memories of an transformational trek through the Andes.
